A Guide to Writer's Heaven 4
WHAT IS WRITER'S HEAVEN?
Writer's Heaven is a power-packed add-on for the popular
shareware word processor, PC-Write. A special set of command keys
in an ingenious arrangement offers you unsurpassed editing
capability.
With a single keystroke, you can move the cursor or delete--
by character, word, line, sentence, paragraph, or page--forward
or backward--without leaving the letter keys! Writer's Heaven can
double your editing speed--yet it's easy to learn and use.
Writer's Heaven 5.0 works with PC-Write 3.0. It does not
support earlier PC-Write versions or PC-Write Lite. Version 5.0B
is a special edition, modified for enhanced compatibility with
our WordPerfect add-on, MorePerfect. Now those who must use both
PC-Write and WordPerfect can enjoy a common set of editing keys.
Here's what registered users say about Writer's Heaven:
"I love Writer's Heaven. It definitely falls under the category
of WHY-DIDN'T-SOMEONE-THINK-OF-THIS-BEFORE?--the hallmark of
genius." Arthur Baxter
"Writer's Heaven is superb." Laurence Vittes, software
columnist, Los Angeles Reader
"It has made PC-Write a worthwhile program for me. I had some
doubts about using this word processor, but now it probably will
become a favorite of mine." Douglas Kaller
"It has changed my word-processing life." Fred Holtby, teacher
"You have made such an improvement on the user interface to
PC-Write that I don't want to use version 3.0 without Writer's
Heaven." Dennis E. Robinson, Compact Systems Consulting
ABOUT SHAREWARE
Writer's Heaven is shareware. In our case, this means
1. We urge you to make copies of Writer's Heaven for others
who might like to try it. Please do not leave out files, remove
documentation, or change the program. There are no other
restrictions.
2. If you adopt Writer's Heaven for regular use, we expect
you to register by sending $10. (Disks purchased direct from
Simple Productions are already registered.) Businesses and
institutions must register for each station at which Writer's
Heaven will be used.
This pays for your use of Writer's Heaven. It also brings:
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 5
-- Technical support by mail and phone.
-- Notice of major updates.
-- News of our other special products for PC-Write users.
Please use the registration form at the end of this Guide.
Foreign payment must be in US$.
We can provide technical support for our own products only.

itself. All phone support is at your expense. Please call at
reasonable hours.
ABOUT OUR DISK
The simplest way to print this Guide continuously: Turn on
your printer and insert your Writer's Heaven disk in drive A. At
the A> prompt, type
GUIDE
followed by RETURN (ENTER). This prints out the file GUIDE.
You can also print the file with PC-Write, if you use
PC-Write's default page layout settings, with no left margin.
Here is a list of files:
README Quick intro
GO.BAT Batch file to display README
GUIDE Documentation and registration
GUIDE.BAT Batch file to print GUIDE

HOTKEY.DOC Documentation for Hotkey
INSTALLING WRITER'S HEAVEN
For a quick trial of Writer's Heaven, open a "scrap"
document with PC-Write and press F2, F6. With your Writer's
Heaven disk in drive A, type
A:HVN
followed by RETURN (ENTER).
To install Writer's Heaven permanently:
1. Copy the Writer's Heaven files HVN and HVNHELP to your
PC-Write working disk or directory. For example, to copy both
files from the Writer's Heaven disk in drive A to a working disk
in drive B, the command at the A> prompt would be
COPY HVN* B:
followed by RETURN (ENTER).
Note: If your workdisk is short of room, you can delete
nonessential PC-Write files like PRINT.TST and CHARS.TST. Or you
can move help or spelling files to another disk.
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 6
2. Use PC-Write to call up ED.DEF, the PC-Write edit control
file on your working disk or directory. On a new line at the
BOTTOM of the file, type
!HVN
Note: If the file contains the line "!PR.DEF", make sure the line
"!HVN" comes AFTER it!
Save the file and exit with F1, F2.
Writer's Heaven will now be called up automatically whenever
you start PC-Write.
To take full advantage of the power offered by Writer's
Heaven, we recommend that you speed up cursor movement by
increasing your "key repeat rate"--how fast a key repeats when
you hold it down. This can be done by a number of macro programs
and keyboard utilities. One such utility, Hotkey, is included
with Writer's Heaven. Please see the Appendix.
Please see the appendix also if you use macros to customize
PC-Write, or if you use PC-Write for desktop publishing.
WRITER'S HEAVEN AND YOUR KEYBOARD
Writer's Heaven is ideal for touch typists. It never makes
you remove your hands from typing position--though you'll have to
stretch a bit.
On old-style keyboards, with the Control Key next to the A
key, always use your left little finger to press Ctrl or Alt. On
the newer, "extended" keyboards, use "two-hand" fingering
instead. For example, for Alt-E, press Alt with your righthand
little finger, and E with the usual lefthand finger.
Some users find the fingering of our Control-key commands
more convenient on the old-style keyboard. If you have an
extended keyboard, you may wish to swap your CapsLock Key with
your right Control Key by placing this PC-Write command line in
ED.DEF:
&J:3
We cannot guarantee this command will work on all systems.
Note: If you are using PC-Write's ED.SPC file for "almost-
compatible" computers or keyboards, Writer's Heaven will cancel
most of PC-Write's key substitutions. Better support for almost-
compatibles is available in Writer's Heaven 5.0.
THE WRITER'S HEAVEN COMMAND SET
Writer's Heaven offers a number of powerful commands not
found on the PC-Write keyboard, and improves others. More
important, Writer's Heaven achieves startling editing speed and
power through several simple principles:
1. All movement and edit commands are located on the
"typewriter keys," for instant access.
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 7
2. Lefthand keys act backward in the document, while
righthand keys act forward.
3. Ctrl-letter keys move the cursor, while Alt-letter keys
delete.
Combining the last two principles generates a command
"matrix." This arrangement packs more power onto the keyboard
than you ever thought possible, while maintaining simplicity and
ease of use.
Unlike other word processors placing primary commands on the
letter keys, Writer's Heaven DOES NOT work by mnemonics--B for
"bold," P for "page," and so on. Instead, Writer's Heaven works
by finger position. As you try the keys listed in the coming
pages, you'll quickly catch on to the pattern, and you'll be able
to locate commands without memorizing letter names. (If you need
a quick reminder, just press Ctrl-Backslash for Heaven Help.)
In the following listings, the PC-Write equivalent key--if
any--is noted in parentheses.
Note: Writer's Heaven displaces PC-Write's commands on the
letter and punctuation keys, but provides substitutes for all
important ones. User macros placed there will be cancelled too,
but can be restored as explained in the Appendix.

THE UNIT KEYS
The most important set of keys in Writer's Heaven is the
Unit Keys. These enable you to move the cursor or delete--by
character, word, line, sentence, paragraph, or page--forward or
backward--with a single keystroke.
Unit Keys always act to the START of a unit. For instance,
if your cursor is in the middle of a sentence, Sentence Up will
move to the start of the same sentence. Repeating the command
will move to the start of the previous sentence. Delete Sentence
Down will delete from the cursor to the start of the next
sentence.

THE ACTION KEYS
The Action Keys perform a variety of functions to make
typing and editing quicker and more convenient. Many are standard
PC-Write operations, but located closer to hand.
BLOCK KEY
Ctrl-P Mark/Move (F6)
Alt-P Mark/Delete (F4)
This is a kind of "editing stickshift" for block operations
usually performed with the function keys. Used along with Unit
and Travel Keys, the Block Key provides super-fast action.
CLEAR KEY
Ctrl-[ Clear Marking (F5)
A companion to the Block Key.
REFORMAT KEY
Ctrl-] Reformat Paragraph (F7, modified)
A handy alternative to PC-Write's F7, and also to Auto-
reformatting, which slows PC-Write a great deal. The Reformat Key
acts on the entire paragraph--unlike F7, which acts only forward
from the cursor.
BOOKMARK
Ctrl-C Go to Bookmark (Ctrl-End)
Note: Set the bookmark with PC-Write's Ctrl-Home.
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 12
GO BACK KEY
Ctrl-X Go Back (Shft-Ctrl-End)
The Go Back Key can often return you to your original place if
you've jumped--on purpose or not--elsewhere in the document.
UNDELETE KEY
Ctrl-Z Undelete (Ctrl-F4)
Retrieves your last major deletion.
THE SUPPORT KEYS
The Support Keys (not pictured) help you use Writer's
Heaven.
FONT KEYS
PC-Write uses Alt-letter keys to insert font characters and other
special symbols. Writer's Heaven has a different use for those
keys, so it moves the PC-Write commands to the Shft-Ctrl-letter
keys. (There they replace one of PC-Write's box-drawing character
sets, which is omitted.)
To insert a font character, press the usual letter key, but
with Shft-Ctrl instead of Alt. For instance, for an Underline
font, press Shft-Ctrl-U. For a page break, press Shft-Ctrl-T.
TEMPORARY MARGIN KEYS
Like PC-Write's font commands, its temporary margin commands have
been moved to the corresponding Shft-Ctrl keys. For instance, to
turn on a temporary left margin, press Shft-Ctrl-[.
OFF AND ON KEYS
Alt-minus (top row) Alt Commands Off
Alt-plus (top row) Alt Commands On
These keys are used for final formatting of proportional and
other specialized fonts, as used in desktop publishing. Please
see the Appendix.
HELP KEY
Ctrl-Backslash Heaven Help
This key brings up a help screen for instant reminder of the
Writer's Heaven keyboard. Note: The file HVNHELP must be in your
PC-Write working disk or directory, and the working disk MUST be
in its disk drive BEFORE you press the key. Also note: Calling up
the help screen resets PC-Write's first bookmark.
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 13
APPENDIX
INSIDE WRITER'S HEAVEN
Basically, Writer's Heaven is a special set of "macros"--
PC-Write keyboard redefinition commands--collected in a control
file named HVN. This is a normal text file you can edit. The
macros use PC-Write's own functions, singly or combined, to
create the Writer's Heaven commands.
The "!HVN" line in ED.DEF tells PC-Write to "read" HVN after
ED.DEF, on startup. If you find some keys not acting as expected,
check ED.DEF for all files PC-Write is instructed to read, and
their order of listing. A macro will be cancelled by any macro
that is read later and that contradicts it. For example, if
"!PR.DEF" is listed after "!HVN", the font control lines in
PR.DEF will cancel most of the Writer's Heaven Alt commands.
WRITER'S HEAVEN AND PERSONAL MACROS
Your macros in ED.DEF will be cancelled if they are assigned
to keys used by Writer's Heaven. These include all letter keys
with Ctrl, Alt, and Shft-Ctrl. The ones that beep have been given
no actual commands, but merely made inactive for safety.
To reclaim control of these keys, place your macros at the
end of the file HVN. Or you can place them in a separate file,
and put "!FILENAME" after "!HVN" in ED.DEF. PLEASE DO NOT
DISTRIBUTE ALTERED COPIES OF WRITER'S HEAVEN.
WRITER'S HEAVEN AND DESKTOP PUBLISHING
Writer's Heaven was designed for maximum efficiency in
editing straight text. Unfortunately, that meant interfering with
PC-Write's ability to format proportional and other specialized
fonts, as commonly used in desktop publishing. This is because
Writer's Heaven must move PC-Write's font commands from the Alt-
letter keys, where PC-Write wants them.
If you are desktop publishing, prepare your document before
printing by following these simple steps:
1. Press the Off Key (Alt-minus, top row) to replace
Writer's Heaven Alt commands with PC-Write printer font commands.
Note: If your print control file does not have the default name
PR.DEF, you will be prompted for a name.
2. Press Ctrl-F5 to mark your entire document, then F7 to
Reformat. Clear the marking with F5.
OR
Reformat and repage through the Alt-F7 menu.
A Guide to Writer's Heaven 14
3. Press the On Key (Alt-plus, top row) to restore the
Writer's Heaven Alt commands.
The document can now be printed correctly. Alternatively,
you can repage and/or reformat with a separate copy of PC-Write
without Writer's Heaven.
WRITER'S HEAVEN AND PC-WRITE LITE
We cannot support PC-Write Lite, because it handles your
print control file differently. However, you can use Writer's
Heaven with Lite if you will only be editing, as you might on a
laptop. The document could be printed later with full PC-Write.
HOTKEY
Accompanying Writer's Heaven is a public-domain cursor
speedup program called Hotkey. We don't know who wrote it, but
we're grateful!
The program file is HOTKEY.COM, and author's documentation
is in HOTKEY.DOC. To run Hotkey from the DOS prompt, type
HOTKEY
followed by RETURN (ENTER). You can instead add this line to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file for automatic running on startup. Hotkey should
normally be run before other keyboard programs.
Hotkey is better behaved than most such utilities, but has
several minor problems. Once in a while a scroll may "run away"--
just press any key to stop it. Your Insert Key may no longer
repeat properly when held down. With long documents on slow
computers, scrolling may become jagged, because PC-Write cannot
always keep up with Hotkey. (An experimental fix for this is
included in our PC-Write Macros, Volume 2.)
